Choose Orange

Choosing healthy options while eating on campus is easy. University Dining Services, in cooperation with the Seretean Wellness Center, is continually examining and analyzing menu items, and has marked the healthiest items on the menu with the Choose Orange symbol. You will be able to find many healthy and satisfying items on the menus at the various UDS options across campus. More items are added all the time, so please be sure to give feedback to the dining staff as to what items you would like to see in the units.

The Choose Orange items follow the US Dietary Guidelines: no more than 30% of total calories are derived from fat; zero trans fats; portion control; limited desserts; and more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. University Dining Services has created a series of Choose Orange goals for the year. They are:

  • At least one cooler or section of a cooler in all locations that feature customer reach-in coolers will have a minimum of 75% Choose Orange items; will include sandwiches, salads, fruits and vegetables.
  • A minimum of 75% of salad bar offerings will be Choose Orange. Each salad bar will have a minimum of three (3) Choose Orange salad dressings.
  • Convenience stores will have a location(s) that will feature Choose Orange; includes cold drinks.
  • A whole wheat bread choice will be provided at all sandwich locations.
  • A minimum of one menu item at every a la carte venue will be Choose Orange.
  • One tablespoon or less of oil per serving will be used at all stir fry locations. Where feasible olive oil and other oils will be offered.
  • The wrap venue at the market will offer a minimum of 80% Choose Orange options.
  • Almost Home in the Student Union and the all-you-care-to-eat venues at the Adams Market and Blair Dining (Bennett Hall) will serve a minimum of one Choose Orange entree (including pasta) and one Choose Orange side item at each meal. Menus will be posted one week in advance on the Residential Life web site including the Choose Orange site.
  • A Choose Orange menu will be developed for catering.
  • A minimum of 10% of the total items offered in drink and snack vending machines will be Choose Orange.
  • Peer Educators and nutrition staff will go to every unit at least once each month to distribute Choose Orange material, answer questions and encourage patrons to eat healthy.
  • At the discretion of individual faculty Nutrition Educators will visit every freshmen orientation class.
  • A regularly updated bulletin board of Choose Orange information will be maintained by Peer Educators and nutrition staff at each venue.
  • A special effort during National Nutrition month (March) will be made by Peer Educators and nutrition staff to encourage healthy eating.
