Academics Within Residential Life

All students are involved in academics or they would not be at OSU. History has shown the students who live in the halls make better grades than students who live off campus. Many factors contribute to this including the learning communities, faculty associates, study areas are available, as well as programs on various study skills.

Advising is available through your college and residential community. The Residential Life staff is actively involved with ongoing academic interventions which utilize residents' grades, class status, GPAs, midterms, resource materials, study sessions, tutors, Faculty Associates, counseling, and other programs. The staff has been carefully trained to be an integral part of residents' academic success.

Cable TV

OSU provides expanded basic cable for the residence facilities. If you have problems with your service, please call 744-9159 for assistance. You also receive Cowboy Cinema, which shows FREE movies and provides information about activities and programs happening in the halls.

Computers

If you live in the residence halls and want to get on the Internet, you have a connection already available. You must connect your personal computer to the network. If your computer does not have an Ethernet card, you will need to purchase one from a local office supply, technology retailers or the Student Union bookstore. You will need a special Ethernet adapter cable with RJ45 plugs as well. The jacks should already be activated in the rooms.
  • RCCs
Ethernet card installation assistance is available free of charge by Residential Computer Consultants (RCCs). RCCs are provided by Residential Life to assist residents in setting up their machines for network access, troubleshooting, virus removal, and installation help.
  • To schedule an appointment with an RCC, residents should first call the IT Helpdesk at 744-HELP (4357). The IT Helpdesk will create a trouble ticket for you, and an RCC will contact you to schedule a convenient appointment time for you.
  • If you experience a virus infection on your computer, have basic installation problems (not network connection problems), or serious malfunctions, you can bring the tower or base of your computer to the RCC Workshop for assistance. The workshop is located in the basement of Wentz Hall, 003B Wentz Hall, and the hours of operation are: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday, Noon to 5 p.m.

Continuous Housing Contracts

Twelve month continuous housing contracts are available in Booker, Davis, Kamm, Morsani-Smith, Patchin, Peterson-Friend, Sitlington and Stout Halls. All halls are open continuously through the academic year, which means students are allowed to remain in the halls during University breaks.

Employment

Student employment is encouraged in the residence facilities and dining options with a wide variety of jobs offered in many areas. These jobs enable you to adjust your work schedule to your class schedule and study requirements. Some work schedules are reduced during scheduled university recesses. All student employees are expected to work through the end of the semester. You can apply on-line at www.reslife.okstate.edu for a part-time job.

Laundry Rooms

Laundry rooms are located in every hall, except for Bost, Davis, Kamm, Morsani-Smith, Peterson-Friend, Sitlington, and Young Halls where full size washers and dryers are provided in each unit. Vending machines with detergents are located in the laundry areas of the traditional halls (Kerr-Drummond, Wentz, Parker, Iba, and Stout) that have coin-operated laundry equipment.

As space is available, Scott Hall provides overnight accommodations for OSU visitors. For more information or to make a reservation, call Scott Hall at 744-5019.

Summer Storage

Summer storage is available at the end of the student's spring contract for those students living in Booker, Bost, Davis, Kamm, Patchin, Morsani-Smith, Peterson-Friend, Sitlington, and Young Halls. To participate, the student must have an OSU housing contract at full rent through the spring semester, and must have a housing contract at full rent for the fall semester. Storage is only allowed in the studentŐs fall housing assignment. There will be no breaks allowed in the contract. Storage costs are $25 per week, with a 6-week continuos minimum. Rent will be charged at the full monthly rate for the periods before and after the storage period. The student must check out per procedure and go to the area in to their area office and sign a storage contract. In the event a student fails to return for the fall, one month's additional rent will be charged in addition to the storage charges.
